Exclamation Any electricians?

I've got a problem with a outlet in my house thats preventing my surge protection thingy from working correctly.

For it to be lit in a "clean power" state it needs to be at or under 120v coming out of the outlet. Which is fine in 9/10 rooms in my house. Obvisously you see the problem coming, the room that which houses my electronic is pumping out 133v for no apparent reason.

Is there any way to loose those 13v some where? If so how.

Electricity is finicky and it varies from house to house. No direct source is exactly 120V, it's actually 120V +/-10V, so reading 133V isn't that big of a variance. It is odd, though, that it's only in one room.

How long has it been like this?

No clue, but I'll either have to upgrade this thing to the bigger one :noway: Or completely switch rooms around :noway: Was sorta hoping for a filter or something to smack on the line, and reduce it. Looks like i'll just have to switch rooms around :noway: :noway: :noway:

BTW here's the link to what i have, and it needs to either read at 120v or under.. When it reads 133 it fails and won't power anything

they are tough to find, but they sell special transformers that will filter out and fix the voltage at exactly 120V. there may be some that have a variable voltage.

i dont know where to find one, but i have one.

I just asked my Uncle, he suggested checking the connection at the breaker (assuming it's on it's own circuit) and the connections at the back of the plug to ensure they are secure.

He said if the connections are loose on either end it can cause amp draw to go up which could be why it's reading high.

If the connections are tight try changing the plug itself.

Dave, stick a paperclip in the socket, that will reduce the voltage.

It may still be a fix, but he's having problems with voltage not amperage.

Good luck getting it fixed.

Had a similar problem when hooking that same unit up in my house, and ended up just taking it back, and getting a old fashioned surge protector

I realize that, he thought the voltage might be reading high due to a higher amp draw.

I have no idea, my Uncle knows more about it than I do - that said he's not necessarily an electrician either :dunno:.

Speaking of which did you figure it out yet Dave?
