anyone seen... The new BMW 128i's? Cheaper, faster BMW for us pooo folk. I hope they slam that twin turbo 3.5 liter in one... If so, bye bye wagon! Breaking News: Lincoln Turbo, VW Tiguan, & More - Features - Car and Driver July 2007

Yeah, I know a lot of people that are excited about the Twin Turbo 1-Series coming to America. Many people that are fans of BMW can't afford a fast one, so I think this will be a good seller as it will allow you to get into a "fast" BMW without having to break the pocketbook. Just a note, BMW only recently brought back the twin turbo in the 3-series, but from what I have read "the 135i will have the same twin-turbo, 3-liter inline 6 with 300 horses and equal level of torque sitting in the engine bay of the big brother 335i".

Also, Mercedes-Benz is rumored to be preparing a competitor to the 1-Series, a B-Class called the BLK (kind of makes me think of something Burger King would call one of their sandwiches!). There are not much details on the car other than Mercedes-Benz is building it to compete with the 1-Series in the US entry-level luxury market, so I would expect it to be spec'd similar to the 135i. I think it will be kind of odd to see "cheap" bimmers and Benz's rolling on the streets of the US? IMO it will somewhat detract from the "Luxury High-End" status that these German carmakers currently hold in the US.

While 30k isn't cheap in the overall scheme of life it is cheap in the luxury car world. My point was that it will be strange to see a bimmer or a benz that you know costs the same as a honda, toyota or Nissan. For example I just priced a 2007 Nissan Altima on nissanusa.com and added any options, configurations or packages that I would expect the 1-Series or B-Class to include, and it priced out to over $31,000. That is what makes it seem cheap to me!

You have to understand that BMW/Mercedes are adopting a policy of "catch them while they're young" Basically, if they offer a car in the low 30k range, college grads and successful young entrepenuers will buy it. When the time comes to replace it, they will only go up, hence the higher end models. |
