I got the replacement motor yesterday. It only has 36,000 miles on it. The car we pulled it out of was hit hard in the rear and on both sides, luckily the front end wasn't damaged. We had it out in less than an hour and a half. We unbolted the motor mounts then had a forklift pick up the motor/trans and removed the tranny after it was set on the ground. Now I have to get the gaskets and new rings. I found a full gasket set on ebay for $60 and topline rings for $50. I almost don't want to tear into it because of the low miles but I cant leave it stock. And I figure I might as well upgrade it while it's out. No point in doing things twice.

I just have to swap the manifolds from my old motor since this one has EGR. EGR sucks.

Well things have been moving lately. I took the replacement motor down to the block, and I have the replacement 10:1 compression pistons and better camshafts. I'm painting brackets, covers, and tubes and what not with black engine paint to make it look good where it was previously bare metal.. Let's get to the pics shall we?

oil pan, A/C bracket, motor mount bracket and some more stuff painted.

cleaning up one of the heads

soaking the pistons in marvel mystery oil

Here are the pistons next to each other.. the stock one is on the right. You can see the big recessed area in the stock piston. The new pistons will bring up the compression from 8.9:1 to 10:1, but it will also make the motor an interference engine. So if the timing belt breaks the pistons will smash the valves. I'm not worried about that though, timing belts dont just break for no reason and my car went 126,000 on the stock one.

And after a little cleaning.

So all I need so I can start the rebuild are piston rings and a gasket set. I'm going to order them from eBay once I have enough money.

I took the crankshaft, rear main, and oil pump off and sent the block to the machine shop to have the cylinders honed and the block cleaned. They finished it the next day and I'm going to pick it up this week. I installed the bearings into the rods and mains. I also found out my transmission mount was shot so I'm going to replace it with a polyurethane filled mount.

Now that I have another car I can take my time with this :D

Okay I brought the block to the machine shop to have the cylinders honed and the block hot-tanked. They had it done the next day.

and with the crankshaft in place..

I also got my ported intake plenum back. They removed all the big restrictions, I'm just going to go over it with a sander to smooth it out and enlarge the ports a little with a dremel.
