Mp5t - *56k will crash and burn!*

Alright, Here is a bit of background of the Turbo Project that I started in 2003 with a brand new Mazda Protege 5... MP5T.

This is simply meant to be a detailed thread on what can be done to a Small Displacement Front Wheel Drive car to give other members ideas or spark questions that could/should be answered. This is the Internet and it's primary function asside from PORN is Learning from others...

First Off..

This Summer I made it to a Newspaper in Sydney. I recieved an E-Mail the other month asking if it would be alright for them to put my car in a Auto Section of an Aussie Paper. I said, Sure, But I want a copy..

Bam!

This Summer I entered my Mazda in it's first Carshow, Sport Compact Nationals in Moncton N.B. ...It ended up winning "Best In Performace". This to me is one of the coolest things that a person could win. Although ICE Paint bodykits and Lights are part of the Sport Compact culture, the real essence in it to me is performance gains in Suspension Power and Weight Reduction. The Judge seemed very excited about the car, about Cardomain, About the fact that it's a daily driver and that Most of it was built in a driveway. He liked the fact that it was a bit of a sleeper and that nothing in the car didn't take away from the goal of driving. The Engine bay is rather naked and the Painted CF Hood also tripped him out like crazy...

:)

The rebuild of the MP5T

A Line of Coolant Oil and Metal 1 Mile long still marks the road where at 235 Km/h the MP5T went Bang and then silent. It was inevitable with sustained high speed.

The Critical Failure...

(PISTONS FROM BEAU!!!)

Stock Length Rods with 8.5:1 CP pistons...
ARP STUDS
Copper Gasket

Jesus.. I Wonder which one is the new one?

The New Hotness!

Old And Busted!

(Crank Balancing)

Feb 14th is the day. The engine is off the stand and upstairs, the Manifold, Head, Cams, Lifters, Pistons, Rods, Bearings. SHIT. It's all in three boxes ready for Monday..

I'm heading to renfrew for...Deck, Head, Alignhoning, Extrudehoneing & Port, Crank Balance, De-Glaze, Assembly.

Feb 15th Today the Engine Was Tanked and the Deck Was brought level again.

The Pistons are going to be placed in the cylinder to check for clearance. If there is too much room, the pistons are being sent to Toronto that day to get 2 Thou of ceramic coating added to the piston head and skirt.

The Boys at Renco are used to much larger engines. He was surprised that the whole thing could be picked up by one person (Me), they had the hoist and everything... Oh, well, I hope this starts a new line of possible work for this big block wonder shop. They smiled when they saw how small the pistons were and then giggled when the remembered that there were only 4 of them. .

(Drivers Side A Pillar)

Parts Arrived, the second Double pod is going above the first one, then the entire pillar is being bondoed and sanded down, primed, painted whit and clear coated, just like the last one. The Guys at Terry's Collision in Pembroke will be painting it along with the CF Hood. I don't have the skills to do it the way it should be done.

Got it all together... I guess it really is that high up...

I got the Manifold Back after getting the EGT Probe welded in the collector. The Header wrap was ordered in Black this time and the Proper Stainless Steel DEI Straps came in just today. Here are some Pictures of the Manifold with the Wraping and the manifold when it was new...

(Parts From Tony at AWR)

Here are some Pictures of the Prototype Protégé 5 Triple Pass T6 Aluminum Radiator. The first picture is just that, the second one is for anyone who does not really know what Triple Pass means...

Rather than one big rad core, the coolant is forced to pass down 1/3rd of the core, up the middle 1/3rd and then down the last 1/3rd to the outlet. Normally a radiator is much hotter in the middle between the two connections and the sides are rather "UNUSED".

Path of least resistance would let the hot coolant flow directly as possible, This rad forces the coolant to travel the entire surface area of the radiator, plus the radiators design is much more effecient. The end result is much more consistent temperature, much better ability to remove excess heat from the coolant and yes a slightly higher pressure rating to allow the temp to get higher without boiling.

More Stuff From AWR came also. The Famous 21mm anti sway bar with adjustable end links front and rear, but I also picked up his stiffer trailing arm for the Protégé. As you can see it's a lot stronger than the stock one, plus it has Poly-U inserts to keep everything aligned during cornering. Result, A Rock solid rear end. All That plus the Tein-ss should make the car like a giant Go-Kart!

The Job of rear suspension is done... 2 Hours from start to finish and no unexpected problems...

Here is the new "Firm Planted" Rear end for MP5T...

(Hood Stuff!)

Extractor Hood Done! It's painted white with the exception of 1" by where the windshield is...To Avoid that ghetto look of a black hood on a white car...

The CF Hood, A-Pillar etc are all painted white to match the car...

IMO CF is Ghetto on a White car...

Ok, Carbon with 4 Layers of White, 4 Layers of Clear.

MS In Carbon and a 1" Strip near the Window.. ENJOY.. I will.

(VALVE COVER STUFF)

It's really quite minor and has not much to do with the "REBUILD" but, detail under the hood is what I was working on as the engine was completely apart.

Valve Cover and Intake Manifold are polished on the outside then the intake manifold went away for a week to get Extrudehoned.

These were taken before the writing was removed...

After removal...

(Timing)
TRI-POINT Adjustable Cam Gears...

The Rebuild Weekend install Pictures.

New Pictures..

Tried Some Walls..

Newer Pictures...
