Question ranger air intake vacum lines

Hi there. I am new to the site, I have a 93 ranger 4.0 and am building a motor for it and want to put a cold air intake intake on it, but i have 2 vac lines in the top of the airbox. Can these be removed? or can i not put an intake on it? Any suggetions? I have been told to just take them off but i don't know what they do or what messing with them will do! Help!
