How to understand gearing?

I hate to sound so ignorant, but what do the gear ratio numbers mean? Does the higher numbers mean lower gearing, and vice versa? Which rear end gearing provides more power "out of the hole?"And which set up is better for gas mileage? I figure that someone out there knows. I am very thankful for your help. I'm OUT.darby:wavey:

you are correct......higher numbers do mean lower gearing. It gives you slightly more power because of the shorter lengths between shifts. For example for 3.73 gears you might shift at 25, 40, 55, etc..., but with 4.56 gearing you would shift something like... 15, 30, 40, 50, etc...

The lower the number the better the gas mileage though, and the higher the worse. So ... there you go.
