Remote Oil Filter

Has anyone had problems with remote oil filters?

I've had nothing but headaches trying to fix oil filter line problem. 1/2" line keeps leaking or splitting. I've lost about 16 litres/quarts of oil in less than 2 weeks.

I run one on my Mustang. We use AN type fittings and braided hose. No problems with this setup.

What type of 1/2 inch line are you using? Though braided AN is best, hydraulic line shouldnt be a problem like you describe?

I guess I should have added more info.
First Ranger project I didn't want to spend $140 on braided lines with fittings, so I went the cheaper route. I had Dayco line, with remote mounted on framerail. The new setup is mounted on the fender, and farther from the engine, so I got new hose, and was sold Goodyear (pink) high pressure. It is too rigid in the cold weather we had in Feb and early March, and leaked a bit at the barbed fittings. Clamps wouldn't stop the leak, I guess because of heat expansion, and the cold contraction. Then the line split.

Moral of the story, I guess is to run synthetic oil, or not drive it in the winter. Now I find out the bypass is closed/plugged.

Lines

Bronconut,

I am almost positive the lines you are using are not meant for the application. Like you the braided was too expensive at installation time for me, so I went to a hydraulic shop and bought some flexible black hose rated at 300 psi at high temp. It cost about $25 for 6 feet.
Getting ready to redo the lines with AN fittings, but still dont want to use the braided line. www.speedwaymotors.com has some blue hose for use with AN fittings, clamp free. You just push it onto the fitting and it holds without a hose clamp. Part number is 1063328. The AN fitting it would go to on the remote unit is a 90 degree, part number 47223908. Fittings attached to the bypass would be straight. Still need to check with them to make sure it is usable as oil line. Although I havent added it up, it seems like the final cost will be around
$80.
If you look at the remote adapter and filter in my gallery, second page, you see the hardware store type fittings on the adaptor. The hose currently just goes over brass barbed fittings in those angled adaptors and is held in place with hose clamps. I want to change that look and lose a little weight in the process. Also dont like hose clamps because they can cut into hose if too tight, and leak if too loose.
If your filter location is above the bypass adaptor, be sure to use an oil filter with a good anti-drain back valve.

Edit: I just called Speedway about the hose, and they said it certainly was applicable as use with a remote oil filter or oil cooler. It has a burst pressure of 1000psi. The person also said he would further secure the hose to the push on AN fitting with a wide body hose clamp, not overtightened.

I've found out this isn't all that uncommon. Several guys I've spoken to say they've had it happen to them. Ususally, it's a little piece of wire brush from cleaning off the gasket material, and it's got into an oil journal, and slowly made it's way through to the oil pump, catching in the bypass, and keeping it closed.

Does anyone have pics of their remote adapter, where it attaches to the block? I want to explore other options, re routing of the oil lines. Thanks
