Turbo Ranger Project

This weekend I will be (beginning) undertaking the task of swapping a 2.3L turbo into an '87 2.3L 4X4 Ranger project vehicle. The motor (and EEC) going in is out of an '84 Turbo Coupe. I had a question on the pin placements for the EEC. I got the pin maps out of a Haynes manual for each vehicle and have studied them. Most of the major pins match so I shouldn't have to change too many. I was wondering how big the task is to reposition the pins and if any special tools are required. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I did this swap to an 83 Ranger in 1990. Used everything from an 88 turbo coupe. It worked great!!

I could keep right up with my friends Z28. He couldn't pull away and I couldn't pass! They ran close to the same.

Good luck with the swap keep us posted.

Got everything together last weekend. Sealed the deal on the Ranger ('88, not '87 as I had mentioned) Friday and got the motor pulled. The body is rotten but I wanted an inexpensive starter vehicle for this project.
Picked up the 2.3T Sat. (actually out of an XR-7, my mistake) I looked at it a couple weeks ago in the boneyard and had them pull it complete with the T5 that was bolted to it. I won't use the trans for this project but it will come in handy in the future - I can use it as a doorstop in the meantime.... I also found an Audi 5000 intercooler that should fit nicely behind the grill in the future.
It was a nice benefit that the the Ranger started with a 2.3 as I was able to swap the serpentine pulley and fan setup and about all the sensors are in the same location.
I got the 2.3T cleaned up and replaced the timing belt, thermostat, and plugs for peace of mind.
I plan to get it dropped in and (fingers crossed) running this weekend.
No Pics yet but I'll see what I can do to get some next week.

Thanks. I've owned an '87 TC and a couple '79 turbo Mustangs but this is the first efi turbo swap I've done. I really recommend getting the manuals for the two vehicles - at least for the EEC pin maps. A lot of libraries will have them. I looked at both Haynes and Chilton manuals and the Haynes actually did a better job of identifying the pins. (that's one of the few things Haynes does better, from what I've seen)

01 - A turbo setup would be cool if you could get it done but your V6 may be a better (easier) candidate for a 5-6psi supercharger. It looks like there is a kit out there by Eaton for it. I don't think the turbo project as I am doing it would translate much to a 3.0 since I'm using a 2.3 and it's pretty much a bolt in project.

I ran into some snags last week when preparing the motor to install. The previous owner had replaced the turbo at some point and had built a custom oil return line. In order to replace the custom line with a factory line I had to remove the turbo starting with the exhaust housing. In the process of removing the exhaust housing I twisted off 3 of the 5 bolts holding it on. I was able to weld nuts on the stubs and get them turned out but this was something I should have known better than to try. The exhaust housing bolts should be soaked with penetrating lube for days not hours - even then they sometimes get cooked and rusted in so tightly it's tough to get them out with out twisting them off. On a good note the turbo appears to be in great condition.
Another gem I found when I got the turbo off was that the exhaust manifold had a 2" crack running vertically between the 2nd and 3rd cylinder. I ground the area clean and wire feed welded it. I will keep an eye on it for future cracks.
A note to keep in mind is that Ford is not supporting all the parts for turbo motors (oil return lines) any longer so the boneyards are becoming more valuable for these items. Fortunately I had a spare I was able to salvage.
I got the heater box trimmed back (required) for clearance of the turbo. I will custom bend an aluminum plate to install in the gaping opening when I get done so I can use the blower motor. I'll be sure to get photos of this part - this is about the only body modification required for this install.
In short I didn't get the motor running yet. I got it set in to check for clearance but a few more things will be necessary before the final bolt down.

It can be done... I turbo charged my 2.3L without doing a swap to a 2.3T... There's another Turbo ranger in my area, just a regular one though... He did the swap... He was running 16psi, I was running 10psi and I kicked the crap out of him...

Anyway, ya... It can be done... It'll just be a pain in the ass to do a single turbo setup... You could always do a twin turbo setup... =P

Keep us posted on the 3.0....a twin turbo would be awesome!
The Ranger project is coming along. Everything is now bolted in and hooked up with the exception of the VAM which I will get to this weekend. Since the Ranger was speed/density I will be running wires directly to the EEC and splicing them in. (some TurboFord advice)
I am going to sacrifice the factory A/C plugs at the EEC and use the ends for the VAM.

BTW - anyone ever done/heard of a swap with the Yamaha 3.0L from an SHO into a Ranger? Don't know what transmission would work but it seems like it would be a good match.

Did you just say Yamaha and SHO in the same sentence?

I assume you mean SHO Taurus? Did Yamaha make the engine?

Well my cousin owns a race/perfromance team, and he has a Turbo sitting in his garage. He has to sell the business cause he is moving to another part of the state. He said he'd GIVE it to me.. the business that is, he said he could have that turbo in there with the custom everything within 3 days and $500. I'm thinking about it, would that void my warranty?

Pretty sure it would void your warranty but $500 is a pretty darn good price for a turbo with complete installation. Especially considering all the custom work required.
