| My F-150s emissions confuse me. With a completely stock 1999 F-150 with a 256 Cubic Inch V-6, I had my vehicle tested for emissions control under a mandate by the Federal Clean Air Act by the Maryland Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program. (I did this a few months ago.) Today I was calculating my gas mileage since I went from 29 inch tires to 31.6 inch tires, AirRaid intake, 4.10 rear end, and Superchip and found that am now getting 16 MPG (not bad for a full size truck). But then I was told that I souldnt drive a truck because I am polluting the environment, so I did a little research on my truck and this is interesting (to me at least). Here is what my emissions test came up with... all readings in GPM Hydrocarbons Allowed .9000 My Hydrocarboms .0013 Carbon Monoxide Allowed 20.00000 GPM My CO 00000.00000000000000000000000000000000000 NONE! Oxides of Nitrogen Allowed 2.3000 GPM My NOx 000.000000000 NONE! Carbom Dioxide No state Standard Mine 42.5385 GPM A Honda Civic DX with a 4 banger was tested just the same. It gets 23.5 MPG city, which is like what 50% more than me? So if you figure that my gas mileage is half of that of a civic then in order to fairly compare my pollution to a civics you would multiply my emissions by 2, this will tell what I burn in the same ammount of driving as a civic (roughly). Now lets look at the civic numbers as found at http://www.ott.doe.gov/otu/field_ops/nve/pdfs/civic.pdf While on regular gasoline this is what the civic gets. Carbon Monoxide 1.595 Oxides of Nitrogen .065 Hydrocarbons .079 Carbon Dioxide 295.7 So in order to see what each of us pollutes in the same ammount of miles, I will multiply my numbers by two in order to make them even. This makes my.... Hydrocarbons .0026 Carbon Monnoxide 000000000.00000000 Oxides of Nitrogen 0000000.00000000 Carbon Dioxide 85.077 The civic releases 3.4 times more Carbon Dioxide than me. The civic releases 30 times more Hydrocarbons than me. and i dont even have nuumvers for the nitrogen and carbon monoxide. I dont know wether my states Federally required emissions test is wrong, or if the Federal emissions test on this website is wrong, or if its right. But it seems like the finger pointing is going in the wrong direction. It seems wierd that I would get half the gas mileage of a car and get the "pollution finger" pointed at me when it only gets twice the mileage I get yet it pollutes 3-30 times more than me depending on the category. I dont get it, someone tell me whats goin on. :puzzled: I am gonna compare it to other cars later tonight.
