Cool 2000 Explorer XLT

I have a 2000 Ford Explorer that I love, I want to add some power to it, any ideas? It has a 4.0 V6, it's peppy enough but could use a little more, I am planning to fix it up with whatever I can find to make it kool. Right now the plans are to get a grille guard, fog lamps, custom 16" wheels and tires and to have it pin striped professionally.

Hey Nathan! Great to have you here. First place to start for more power IMP is

Intake / Headers / Exhaust. Get that V6 breathing a bit better. Have you done anything yet in those areas?

Not yet, I am just trying to fix it up cosmetically, but man I love my Explorer, in fact iwish I could find a bumper sticker that said that.:wavey: I love my FORD. To me FORD means First On Race day.

If you want to see pics of my explorer and some of my other pics go to

Looks good! Just keep in mind you are pushing around alot of weight. That Explorer wasn't built for speed. But you can make it faster. Thats for sure!

Exclamation Re: 2000 Explorer XLT

I also have a 2000 Explorer Sport, and I agree they're a great vehicle.
As was stated, the best place to start with power upgrades are an aftermarket intake and performance exhaust.

After that, you'll want better handling. Go with a larger rear anti-sway bar, poly swaybar bushings all around, performance shocks, and wider tires.
There's a "Roadmaster Active Suspension" kit out there that will really make it ride on rails......

Re: 2000 Explorer XLT

Hi FordFan. Actually I have the Roadmaster kit sitting on the garage floor (for the last 2 weeks).
No time to install it yet, but I'm hoping to next weekend if nothing else gets in the way.

I have all the other mods on mine that I listed. It's by no means 'fast', but it's indeed 'fast-ER' than stock, and does handle much better.

I'm looking for big things from the Roadmaster kit, from all I've read about them. Hope I'm not disappointed; I'll keep ya' all posted on how it does......

Re: 2000 Explorer XLT

Best bang for the buck, IMO, would be a hand held tuner. A good one will run you about $200-400.
You just plug it into the diagnostic port in your cab and follow the prompts.
Don't get one of the ones that piggyback on to your stock chip. IMO they're a waste of time/money.
Take a look at these 2 shops.

Bamachips, The Mustang Tuning Source
Underdog-Performance, Stuff For Your Ranger
