Explorer help needed

Hey guys, looks like I maybe doing some work on a 98 explorer. This is my brother inlaws truck, he had it towed to my shop and he said the motor just quit while he was driving it. Now first I will tell you vehicle maintence is never a priority with him. First thing I noticed was oil all over the top of the motor. Then when I turn it over it sounds like it is getting no compression. Now the oil on the top of the motor I beleive is from lack of oil changes, the pcv is plugged solid and I beleive crankcase pressure just blew oil out the top and is unrelated to the motor quiting. Without tearing this thing apart I am thinking timing belt. The motor is a 4.0 v6 with 185000 km on it and I think it would be safe to assume it is the original belt on it. Does anyone know how often the timing belt should be changed on a 4.0 and roughly how much labor is involved?

Are you sure it's the timming chain and not the head gasket?
I would strongly recommend you take it to a shop first and let them determine exactly what’s broke. Rather than you trying to guess what the problem could be. Once they tell you what's broken then go ahead and fix it yourself, depending upon your mechanical expertise. They will also be able to tell you exactly how many hours it will take to have a professional do it.

may be compression in one of the pistons.

Unfortunatly I won't be able to look at it till the weekend. Have to move some vehicle around so I can get it into the shop. My brother inlaw has no money so I am going to see what I can do for him. I was just guessing timing belt cause it was sohc, but it probably is a timing chain.

He's driving around in an Explorer and has no money:puzzled:

Then how will he be able to lower it, slap on some 18" w/Pirelli tires, install performance shocks & sway bar kits, tint the windows black, and oh yea lets not forget about the killer sound system. Which all of these are requirements for an explorer. I think he's pulling your leg. Tell him to get off his wallet and you will throw a Powerdyne supercharger on his ride while you have the engine torn apart.

I know Steve (my brother inlaw) has no money. He went bankrupt a couple of years ago, and got the explorer on one of those used car lots that specialize on these situations. I think the way they work is you pay double what the vehicle is worth and it is suppose to rebuild your credit. Personally I think it is a scam but what the hell. As far as the supercharger goes, I would be happy if he would just change the oil everynow and then...LOL

My god, I cannot believe the crap on top of this motor. Three hours to get off valve covers and intake. Thats insane. Well this motor is Timing chain, 2 actually. Drivers side is on the front of the motor and pasennger side is on the back. The timing chains are gone but so is the rest of the motor. Both cams the lobes are wore right off and the rings are burnt. I have never seen oil as bad as what was under the valve covers. Just imagine whats in the pan. When I get a chance I will get some pics.
