loud engine pinging noise

just wondering if anyone could help.

when accelerating in my explorer all i can hear is a very loud pinging noise coming from the engine. using premium gasoline helps a lot with the noise but i can still hear it sometimes. does anyone have any idea what this might be or what i could do to fix it?

thanks!

Noise

My father used to have a 94 explorer and his had the same problem. He had to use premium gas and put better spark plugs in it. But even after that it was still kinda noticable. I will give him a call tommorow and ask him if he ever solved that problem. I will let you know.

that's detonation. its basically the fuel getting into the cylinder and igniting before the spark ignites. its like grenades going off on top of your pistons. a lot of it will blow holes in your pistons. do NOT stop using the high octane gas if you can.

The only problem with that is, that, unless you've put a chip in it, the engine is designed to run on 87 octane. Most every opinion I've read on this is that the higher octane is only covering up the problem, not fixing it. Which engine do you have, the V6 OHV or V6 SOHC, or the V8? I'm familiar with the OHV, which does have some common problems with pinging, usually caused by the engine running a little bit lean. Heard of several fixes. For mine ('92 OHV) I needed to tighten the lower intake manifold bolts (See thread in under the hood). Some fix it by cleaning the mass air flow sensor. some have a vacuum leak. some fix it by decarbonizing the cylinders, some have fixed it by getting a good injector cleaning.
If it's the SOHC, it seems to me that could be caused by a recall with the cam tensioners or o-rings or something. A little more research into this may solve the problem.
Haven't heard of it being a problem with the V8, so no advice if this is your case.
Good luck.

It is possible that one of your spark plugs has worked itself loose.

You should check them real quick, be careful not to over tighten.
