HP Question for 5.0 explorer

Ok so you get an explorer with a 5.0 302 CI engine. It only has 215 HP? :damnit::puzzled:

why? its a 302. Im not doggin anyones ride, I think the 302 is the greatest engine ever made, but why does a mustang have so much power and an explorer doesnt?

My engine is 46 CI smaller and it only has 10 less horsepower. 256 CI and 205 HP.

Did ford power down the 302 for the explorer or what? And if they did cant you reverse this? I know since emmisions controls the 302 lost a TON of power but I never realized the explorer only got 215.

again, not bashin anyones explorer, if i had a choice i would get the 302 in my truck.

just wonderin whats goin on.

yes it can... since i have the expo w/ the 5.0 i have done some research... the whole top on the engine was redone... there isn't a market for an expo w/ 300 horse... the main reason for the expo was it is a family car so why would ford waste the money and fix up the engine... it is all bout gas milage...all i have to do is change the cam, intake, fuel rail, injectors, throttle body, mass air flow sensor... that is bout it...

the explorer 5.0 accually has more potential than the mustang 5.0 cause it has a newer head design that flows more. the restrictions on the engine are the MAS and the cam. get those and a chip or a new ECU and you will be at or above the mustang factory hp. there is a guy on www.explorerforum.com named troll that has a 300+hp X. but he is running a supercharger and i think nitrous. still its impressive. check it out

Explorer mods

All you need is a chip, open air induction and a freeflowing exhaust and you might be suprised at the gain in power you will get. I have been in my buddies 98 X V-8 with those mods mentioned above and Holy Christ what a difference it maid!

I agree that the 5.0L X's are a little doggish but it doesn't take much to open them up to let it breathe better. I'm Thinking of those mods for my 97 Eddie Bauer 5.0L when I'm done with my Ranger. The power is there in the V-8 X's waiting to be unleashed, it's up to you on how much more power you want.

The Explorer 5.0 has the GT-40P heads. This head is every popular in Factory Stock class racing with Mustangs. Many many people are runnin mid to low 12's with these heads, ported like hell. The cam leaves much to be desired, as do the stock exhaust manifolds. Upgrades in those 2 areas would yield incredible results. The upper and lower intake on the Ex is highly desirable for Mustang guys. Its essentially the same design as the Holley Systemax kit.
