Explorer Gurus

Ok, my parents have an Explorer that doesn't like to shift into reverse. They will crank it up and put into reverse to back out of the drive and it will sit there for approx. 20-30 sec. before it shifts. Then when you go back to OD or D it will shift but the O/D light on the instrument panel will blink. They have to kill the engine and crank it back to reset everything and then it is ok. Sometimes the light blinks and sometimes it doesn't. Most of the time when you go from rev. to drive it will blink. So what do you think???
They had it looked at and the mech. told them it was some kind of shift module or something like that. I don't remember exactly. Some kind of computer chip or module. But it would be a couple hundred bucks to fix so they haven't done it yet. Does this sound right?
BTW....it is a 96 Explorer 4.0L 4x4 w/ 100k+ miles and auto tranny.
Not neccesarily a pressing problem just aggravating one so any suggestions would be good. Thanks!

I hate auto trannys with a passion. There is one thing that I am sure of: If you are "tranny dumb" like me, its real easy to get burned. The 92 ranger I had (same tranny) needed to have the tranny rebuilt. $1800 bucks later it still sucked. It lasted long enough to outlive the 12 month warranty before we took it in for ANOTHER rebuild. This time, I shopped around. I found a reputable shop that was more expensive, but offered a better warranty and helped me understand what they were doing and what all those seals, pumps, rings, bands, gears, and clutches were for. I was charged $2100 bucks, but the tranny felt better than it did new.

SO, all Im sayin, is beware.......

Well, they decided to sell it to my little brother and buy them a new Mercury Mountaineer. So I think I will just let him worry about it!!! LOL

just to let you know, that is a common problem among explorers trannies. it has something to do with the t.v. cable on the tranny as well as another sensor! so its up to you to fix it or have someone else do it!

fast 74 ranger...its not the same tranny...your 92 ranger had the A4ld and the 95+ has the 4r55e which is an electronic controled tranny. i would guess it is either the module or the tv cable which gets slack init and doesnt work right.....that may be why the light blinks...the computer is confused with the information its getting.....the tps is saying one thing and the tv sensor is saying another. with the 95+ you have to remember that everything is electronic and monitored by the ECU....the shift linkage may be off too causeing the ECU to be confused and not to shift....its a self prtection measure so the computer doesnt trash the tranny if something isnt quite right.
