Gasoline at $4 Coming to a Pump Near You

According to Bloomberg.com gasoline prices will reach around $4.00 a gallon in the coming months.

Quote:
April 23 (Bloomberg) -- Whether it's $50 to fill up your Prius or $130 for the Ford Expedition, $4-a-gallon gasoline is coming to a pump near you.

Fuel prices are rising at a pace not seen since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita knocked out a third of the U.S. oil refining industry in 2005. Gasoline consumption is climbing twice as fast as last year and will accelerate when summer travel begins late next month.

``What we're surprised by is the increased demand,'' said James Mulva, chief executive officer at ConocoPhillips, whose refineries from California to New Jersey produce 56 million gallons of gas a day, enough to meet 14 percent of the country's needs. ``Even though the price of gasoline is up, the demand is up,'' he said in an April 12 interview in Houston.
It is interesting to note the part of the article:
Quote:
"Last year, we had pump prices well over $3 for the summer and gasoline demand was up,'' Pursell said in an interview. ``Would $4 gasoline cause demand contraction? I think it will, but I also thought $3 gasoline would.''
It sounds like the oil companies seem to believe that they can charge whatever they want for gas because of demand. All at the same time being some of the most profitable companies in the world.

Re: Gasoline at $4 Coming to a Pump Near You

This doesn't surprise me at all. Gas has been going up at the rate of $.08-.10 per week since mid Jan. here in Calif. We are now up to $3.39.9. for regular unleaded.
If you need or want the premium grades of gasoline, that will cost you between $3.60-3.70 per gallon depending on your brand of choice.
That's as of yesterday. Haven't looked yet today. That's also a rise of $1.15 in the last 15 weeks. And the summer driving season is still several weeks off.
I can envision $4.00 per gallon here in Calif. very easily by mid June or definitely for the 4th of July weekend.

101+ grade runs about $3.50/gal around here while 87 octain is going at 2.95 to 3.01/gal. The only thing this hike will due is curb my cruizen to show'a that are 50 miles or more to get to.

Time for the 63MPG Diesel Accord

Honda expects to bring the clean-diesel car to the U.S. by 2010. It gets 62.8 miles a gallon on the highway, but otherwise looks and feels like a regular Accord. At that mileage level, the car is about as "clean" as a new Toyota Prius. But if you run it on biodiesel, a form of diesel made from vegetable oil or animal fat, it would be even cleaner than a Prius (Priuses get 60 in the city).

Never considered a Honda. But if these prices keep going this way maybe I'll have to.

Re: Gasoline at $4 Coming to a Pump Near You

The prices are just getting too much, its just too much.

I cant see how anyone on the lower income ranks can even affort to drive to work let alone anywhere else.

The oil companies make billions in profit every year, and it goes up every year. But all we regular folks hear about is how they dont have the refineries, are busy making fuel oil, china is buying all the oil, etc etc etc.

Everyday a billion and half of dollars of fuels are sold in the USA alone, and every year hundreds of billions are made by the oil companies in profits in the us alone, ....

Where does it stop.

(rant off,....sorry,..its a sore spot with me)

Re: Gasoline at $4 Coming to a Pump Near You

The energy prices are hurting most of us. Even if what the Oregon news says is true, that consumptioin and driving are at higher levels than ever, another figure has borrowing and consumer debt at record levels too. Living standards are taking a hit.
At the rate miles are accumulating on my Ranger, I will put close to 800 miles in total on it for the entire year. All trips possible are made in the Honda. Sometimes it means delay or the wife and I going to town together, rather than using two vehicles. The Honda is 35 plus mpg vs 19.
Our largest gas expense is actually for mowers, tractor, and other small engine tools used on the ranch. Row cultivation for the vinyard has been cut in half, with similar reductions in other ranch activities.
It pisses me off too Smirkley. Corporate attitude to the regular guy/gal is one of entitlement. They are entitled to every bit of our money that they can squeeze out, using gimicks, fear, deceit, whatever it takes. But too many Americans are more than willing to give the oligarchs all they desire, with little introspection into their own spending habits. If the squeezing is allowed to continue, say goodbye to the middle class (it is shrinking as I write).
Rant for the day (RFTD).

Re: Gasoline at $4 Coming to a Pump Near You

Problem is for most people,... they get a pay raise at best of 3 to 5 percent a year.

Now factor in a 20 to 35 percent increase in gas cost per year for most commuters into the same family budget.

Something has to get cut out somewhere.

Food? Clothes? Mortgage?

Somewhere.
