GT 500 availability

This may just be a California thing, but it doesn't seem that Ford has produced enough of the GT 500. I know that on many of the lots here in Cali when a GT500 arrives it is typically gone quickly. I have even heard that when one arrives it turns into a bidding war for the car, and sometimes can go for as much as twice the list price.

Has this been seen in other places? Is this because of production numbers, or because of owners that want to be the first to have a car and unwilling to wait until the car is highly available?

Re: GT 500 availability

This is a very interesting question and I'm hoping if there are any dealers on here that they can chime in.

It seems like the GTs I see for sale once in a long while are private sales. the original buyer usually can't handle the car.

Re: GT 500 availability

im not a dealer, but i also have heard of bidding wars going 20k plus over sticker price...my understanding is that the local dealer just got one but it was pre-ordered for well over sticker...

Re: GT 500 availability

So that is ok by Ford that dealers are selling these awesome cars for well over sticker price? I'm sure they want their dealers to do well. but something about this just doesn't sound right.

what is the sticker price on these GT 500s anyway?

Re: GT 500 availability

There is a dealership near us that we sell alot of performance parts too. It seems they always have a GT500 in the show room. I have seen them deliver 2 or 3. In-fact the day I got my truck they delivered a red one. They had a yellow with black stripes that lasted the longest. It was there most of the winter. Maybe they were just storing it, who knows.

Yes they do sell them for something like $250k. They post the price right on the window. They are not shy about it.

Right now they have two Shelby mustangs. 60k for a hardtop blue, and 67k for a orange convertable.

They do pretty good for the average size dealership.

It's called the law of supply and demand Stang. If the supply is small enough or the demand is great enough, or both. The price is guarantied to go up.
That same rule works in reverse though. If the dealer has a large supply or there is little or no demand for a particular model.
Then the price goes down. And you get rebates and sales on those models.
If you have the patients to wait, the supply will usually increase or the demand will decrease and the price will come back to normal.
A few years ago Ford brought out a car they called the "Probe." Remember that one? Well they hyped it so well that the demand went through
the roof before the car even hit the showrooms. My idiot neighbor at the time wanted one so badly he paid almost twice the list price for it.
A few years later the demand for them was so small that Ford stopped making them. My neighbor had a very expensive turkey on his hands.
If you just can't wait, plan of paying a ridiculous price for whatever it is you're looking to buy.

Re: GT 500 availability

I know we have some dealers on here. Anyone care to comment on how you mark up a vehicle like this. Is the sky the limit? Just depending on what people are willing to pay?

No, unfortunately, not a joke. Personally I don't see anything wrong with it. If you're dumb enough to pay those prices, they're smart enough to charge them.
Like I said it also works in reverse. If they get a bunch of cars that nobody wants, they have to bite the bullet and drop the price to get them off the lot.
We all know people like my ex-neighbor. They don't look any further into the future than the day after tomorrow. Recently read a "for sale" ad on another forum.
Guy was trying to sell a Ranger that he had purchased 6 months earlier for 30K. His ad said the price was "not negotiable."
When told his truck wasn't worth that much, his response was that 30K is what he still owed so he couldn't sell it for less.
Went on to say he had a balance on the loan of his "trade in" 3 or 4K I think and he had rolled that into the new loan. He purchased the truck with "no money down."
Bottom line, after taxes, dealer prep and stuff like that, he drove off the lot owing almost 32K, PLUS INTEREST, on a truck worth maybe 25-26K.
I'm sure salesmen and finance officers love guys like him. Give him a monthly payment he likes and he'll never ask the price, the interest rate or lenght of the loan.
In short he has no idea what he's paying for whatever it is he's buying. He'll go through life broke and probably blame everybody but himself for it.
He'll never admit that the problem is his 12 year old, instant gratification, mind set.

Re: GT 500 availability

Alot to think about there. Maybe the dealers on board can chime in on how not to get ripped off. Sure common sense is a must and it sounds like this guy selling the Ranger and your neighbor were / are lacking that.

The Probe was a decent car though. But not for the money your neighbor paid

Re: GT 500 availability

DEARBORN, Mich., April 19, 2007 – Even with demand for the most muscular Mustang ever – the Ford Shelby GT500 – at a record high, Ford is cranking up additional interest with a new, limited-edition package that adds unique visual appeal to the Shelby GT500. Enter the "Red Stripe Appearance Package," to be available beginning in May.
Limited Edition Ford Shelby GT500 Available Soon

So a "Limited Edition" version of a car that already seems to be very limited to start with. I wonder how much one of these will go for over MSRP?

That all depends on the buying public. I'm sure many of the people buying these cars are not auto enthusiasts.
Many, if not most will be speculators that purchase the car hoping to keep it for a while then sell it at a profit.
If you just have to have a "Limited Edition" anything, expect to pay top dollar for it. That's just the way things are.
