2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR to Debut in New York

Wednesday, March 28, 2007
BY ALISA PRIDDLE, PHOTOGRAPHY BY TOM DREW
March 2007

Ford Motor Co. continues to bolster its Mustang lineup—how many more versions can the world handle?—with yet another special edition. The Shelby GT500KR will be on display at next week’s New York auto show.

More details are promised by week’s end, but one sad fact has leaked out: this won’t be the first look at the long-awaited V-8 “Boss” engine that has been in perennial development.

Plans for the Hemi-fighter from Ford, on and off the product plan in recent years, are back on track but still months away, it appears.

The expectation is the Boss will range from a 5.0-liter V-8 in a future Mustang—Ford used this year’s Detroit auto show to display a Ford Racing 5.0-liter V-8 Cammer engine in the Interceptor concept sedan that rides on a stretched Mustang platform—to a 6.2-liter OHC mill in the pending new F-Series due later this year.

As for the new KR, it harkens back to a special-edition version of the 1968 GT500, a nostril-flaring beast dubbed KR for “King of the Road.” The original had a Cobra Jet 428-cubic-inch engine, a live rear axle, and rear drum brakes. Base price for the ’68: $4473.

Re: 2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR

That new Shelby looks great. But I have to say it. The car looks way to heavy. These high end mustangs need to go on a diet if they ever want to compete with the ZO6. Its just way to heavy! It seem like GM takes weight into account where Frod doesn't. The end result is a car that is just to heavy to compete with the big boys

Go with a Saleen S281 "E" with a 4.6v8 550hp and 525tq 6-spd with a 4:10 rear end, top end speed 211 mph. This Mustang is all over the zo6. Plus the 4.6v8 is 403lb lighter than the 5.4v8 that is in the Shelby.

Re: 2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR

Now we are getting somewhere. Thanks for that info RJ. But are you sure that can compete with the Z06? Or can it just come close. $ for $ there is not much that can touch the Z06. but I need to find more info on this SALEEN you speak of.

Re: 2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR

Yeah, Mustangs have basically grown heavier ever since they were introduced. I forgot where I saw that, I think in Car and Driver or something. But it's a sweet looking car, nonetheless.

It looks pretty good. And I must say I like the colors better then the first images I see on the top of this thread. But how many variations of rht Mustang is Ford going to come out with Its like 32 flavors of ice cream at this point.

The answer to that is, as many as they think they can sell.
