Problem with the Stang...

Ok well when i was driving my car today, it being very rough...so i took it to ford after the check engine light came on and they told me it was the maf (i think) sensor? what is this? They said they would replace it but this would be the only time that they could do it for free. My car is a 2001, why would the sensor already be bad?

A maf is a MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR! It is conected to your intake and all it does is regualte how much air is being sucked into your engine! Im not sure why it would go bad, it jut could be a freek thing! But they are expensive, and actually ford has to replace it more then once if necessary because of the warrente! Don't buy that BS about not being able to do it for free! Thats all covered by your warrente!!!! LOL!

ive heard that the MAF and IAC sensors can go bad as early as 50 miles, so at least you got a year out of it...hehe, but dont feel bad about ford, they have given me many problems too...just tell them that you wont be back to buy a car from them again and you will have them on there knees waiting to help.

**Just for the record, more than likely they will be on there knees to help you anyways...Mmmm Mmmm, damn. lol im just playin with you, hope this helps.

If you have a K&N air filter or some kind of oil-based air filter on your pony then it's possible that it messed up the sensor. Sometimes a new filter, or recently cleaned filter, has too much oil on it, and it will contaminate (sp?) the MAF sensor. I have heard of dealerships not covering warr. work due to this problem. Just put your old stock filter in when you go in for service. Hope this maybe helps. Did you buy your car new or used? Is it stock? Just U2U me if you have any questions. hee hee...wink wink.....

Unless you have had your car 3 years or are pushing 36,000 miles on the odometer they are full of shit. The mass air sensor is an expensive piece though so you should definately have them do it. If it goes bad after warranty you might as well upgrade to a performance piece though.

Here is a little bit of info i took off of another site.. where this topic about voiding warranty is brought up alot....

Q: Do aftermarket products like K&N filters, exhaust, and chips void my warranty?

A: The nutshell answer is "No". However, the installation of an aftermarket product such as a Cat-Back exhaust will, of course, void the warranty of the factory exhaust - and so forth. There are consumer protection laws enacted to allow us to install aftermarket products. The Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act is a Federal Law that governs consumer product warranties. It was passed by Congress in 1975. One of the many provisions of The Act is that it prohibits so-called "Tie-in Sales". Generally, tie-in sales provisions are not allowed. Such a provision would require a purchaser of the warranted product to buy an item or service from a particular company to use with the warranted product in order to be eligible to receive a remedy under the warranty. In other words, requiring the use of only Ford brand products in order to maintain your warranty. More information is available at the Federal Trade Commission website.

basically what that is saying is...

if you have an aftermarket exhaust. the factory system is voided.. and if the dealership says they will not fix something because it has an exhaust on it or a lift... they have to fix it, or prove that whatever you installed caused the problem...

If it is the MAF then you can try to correct the problem yourself by removing the electronics from the housing and using a Q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol to CAREFULLY clean the elements that are soldered across the posts on the MAF. These are what get coated with oil from a K&N filter and will alter the resistance of the wire as current is passed through it. To remove the electronics just take out the two screws on top of the MAF and pull straight up. Be carefull because there's an o-ring that seals the electronics to the MAF housing. Reinstallation is the opposite of removal. Good luck.

it could possibly be the ignition control module. it starts off having car idle rough then it starts stalling unexpectedly, then gets to the point of not starting at all! ford has a silent recall of some 15 million cars made from the mid 80's to late 90's including mustangs, taurus, ranger, tbird, and explorers. but not limited to just them. my 89 tbird sc was covered under that recall last sept. before i sold it!
