Thumbs up 460 into a 87 gt.

Hello. Need some advice on the pros and cons on installing a 1972 stock 460 and C6 into my 87 Gt. I know theirs install kits for that but just needing advice. Such as suspencion, rear end, and other upgrades that would have to be done.
Also having trouble decodeing the VIN on this truck the engine is coming out of. Again it's a 1972 F250. Vin # is F25YCM87388. The 5th.digit is the engine code I believe. The intake on this engine has a 460 Edelbrock Preformer. So I assume the engine is a 460. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks..Steve.

do not assume anything! that intake can be used on other motors than just the 460! i wish i code decode that VIN for you to help you out! the best thing to do is find the casting # on the block and the heads. that will help you out more since the original motor could have been replaced with a different size motor!

the best bet on decoding the vin is to take the vin to a dealer

Another question I have are what are my options as far as transmissions to hook up to that 460 into my mustang? Can the stock 5 speed work at all? Thanks

According to this page, which references F series, it appears you have a F-250 2 wheel drive with a 360 motor and it was build in Ontario Canada.
http://www.fordf150.net/howto/decodevin2.php
However this page only seems to be for trucks 1973 or newer...

I checked ebay, and found this f-250 with a 460 motor...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2418787960
It has the vin code F25YLN44040, so I would guess your truck is a 460. Concerning what tranmission to use, your gt's 5 speed will neither bolt up, or withstand the torque of the 460, so that is pretty much out

A T5 will not stand the torque of a 460. Stick with the C6 or run a powerglide. I run a glide behind my stroker and love it.

I put a 429 in an 88 Gt I used motor mounts from a 77
Lincoln Headers Hooker super comps fit the best but they are high $$

Remember anything will fit if you really want it to.

there are only two trannys that i have seen in everday cars/trucks that have a big block....the c6 and an np431 (or something like that {comes in 70's ford trucks}) (granny first gear 4spd) of the two the c6 would be best.....also if wanting to convert to an BB than a whole new suspension will be needed id think......(BB's are only like 200 or so lbs more than a SB)....

In my opinion 429's are the better engine although they are the same as a 460 except for the stroke length....The can be built just as good as a 460 and rev higher in most cases....

With a 429 block, you are only a crankshaft away from 460 cubic inches. If it's a true 460 block it would have "460" imprinted on the front of the block by the driver side cylinder bank. Some even have the "460" imprinted backwards. Casting date codes can be found in the lifter valley.

Tell me your block casting number(not the date casting) and if you have 2 or 4 bolt mains, and I can tell you if it's a Cobra jet or not. I bet it's a D7TE or D8TE truck block, which has 4 bolt mains.

ok i have been watching this for a while
bleak it is a np435 bb and sb is a chebby term fords have different familys

if it is a true 429 cobra jet ketie bar the door yougot one heck of a motor to build

for a auto tranny use a c4 built the c6 will robb 15 horse power over a c4 built, a manual tranny would be any thing out of a 70 thought 76 mustang,torino,any thing with a 351 c,351m/400,429 ,460
