2.3L Turbo ona Ranger 2.5L????

Anyone ever consider placing a 2.3L turbo onto a Ranger 2.5L? Is this possible and does anyone know if the 2.3L turbo exhaust headers, etc, would be readily adapted to a 98 ranger 2.5L?? I'm not looking for massive boost just a bit more pepp in the midrange for a daily driver :)

I believe the SVO 2.3L is the essentially the same block as the 2.3l/2.5l motors, except for some increased cooling and oiling passages. But externally they are very identical, so it should be close to a drop it, if the turbo doesn't get in the way.

The only thing to consider is how old is the 2.3l, and what type of condition is it in? No doubt it has to be pretty old at this point as I believe they were produce in the mid eighties. Replacement parts may be hard to come by, or just plain expensive. But they definitely were cool motors in the Ford SVO mustangs.

Actually I just want the turbocharger and required equipment installed onto the 98 2.5L engine. I'm hoping that this won't turn out to be as financially demanding as an engine swap or bringing the truck to a shop and having custom work done. Thanks for the help

I'm curious Yoshtin, if a 3.0l turbo is too expensive, how much are you getting a Supra motor for? I hope you are good with wiring...

On the 2.3l turbo, This is a bugger of an upgrade, but from what I can tell the exhaust manifold/turbo should bolt up. However you will probably also want to get the computer, which means you will do some serious rewiring.

http://www.coolcats.net/tech/general/23turbo.html
This is a chromed out Merkur 2.3 engine, but it's shows how the turbo 2.3l resembles the ford 2.0/2.3/2.5l engines.

Here's a good list of all the differences:

Sounds like your block will work, but you need to make an oil drain for the turbo.

I've got some engine interchange literature at home that may offer more.

The 2.5 is derived from the 2.3...bore & stroke different(i think). Some work may have to be done to match exhaust man to head. Like 2k3Edge said...you'll probably want to use SVO Turbo computer.
Why not just drop a 5.0 in there!? All the power upgrades you'd ever want with that.

Oh no, they are both the Pinto derivative motor. Actually it's a pretty nice motor, it just needs a little more refinement to equal the HP the import 4 cylinders are making. But the SVO turbo motor? It could hang with a 5.0l (back in 84 and 86). Combine that with less front end weight, and better handling, it was quite a car. The same motor was also found in the turbo coupe thunderbirds. But the exhaust manifold should bolt right on, but you'll have fun routing all the oiling/cooling lines. I've got a haynes manual for 79-93 mustangs and the bolt patterns are all the same, but the torque and bolt order can vary.

Sound like a fun project.

Re: 2.3L Turbo ona Ranger 2.5L????

I've got a 1999 Ranger 2.5L, would this 'top mount' turbo setup work for my truck? Ebay shows this 2.3L turbo kit that I'm interested in, and it seems to have most of the equipment needed. Any pointers anybody can give are helpful. Thanks
