180 is low for a 2.9 you can bump them quite nicely if you are willing to pay, also once you pass the 200 your torque tends to not come until high revs which makes your truck useless for a work truck.

Port and polish is a must, get yourself a 5.0 Throttle body and a custom adapter plate to mount it, bore your cyliders, new computer chip, headers, exhaust, cam, get a 4.0 radiator to keep it all cool, and oil cooler, and a 180 degree t-stat. all this should get you to at least 230 hp.

I suppose that becomes the question then. Do you want more high end horsepower at the expense of low end torque, or is the low end torque more important than a few extra ponies? Are there any mods that increase hp w/o cutting into that low end torque, or are they mutually exclusive?

I have met two guys who got about 280 hp and about 290 torque, their secret is the cam they had custom ground, they wont tell anyone what the lift and duration is, but you cant get that amount of hp without the cam and the cam wont give you low end torque, so I suppose that the power comes at the expense of low end. but dont take my word, it might be possible.

Sure, a camshaft, roller rockers, and bigger springs will help you rev more. A chip can take away any rev limiter (if the 2.9 even has one). Little things like intake, exhaust, headers, etc can build up the potential.

no cold air intake is madde just for the 2.9, but a dodge neon one fits, but goes toward the wheelwell, i was going to do exhaust soon, a few more, i want headers, but i dont want to replace them, just get new heads (dont want to deal with the whole broken bolt in the head thing) and i dont want to completely rebuild the engine, just get a little more out of it. does anyone know where i can get a chip for it?

you can get both the chip and headers from James Duff, but the chip isnt the greatest and I have heard the Headers rust(unless you get the Powder coated ones) and then there is Jeggs, and many other auto and truck parts online.

200 or less...I think you will be doing without headers, unless you find them at a junk yard.
