302 in a ranger

Ok I was talkin to my friend about putting a turbo on my truck... He told me that it would cost me more to put a turbo on my truck then a 302.... but anyways... I was wondering which would be cheaper? and which would be better? and also what is a 302 worth?

But if you do do a conversion... do a 302... (you can always supercharge or turbo that later). your stock engine is not meant to be turboed and it cant take the strain.

well the deal is that i can get a 302 for about $100... needs a carb... and i was wondering if my transmission would bolt up to it? if not then what kind of transmission can i get that will? and what type of drivetrain will i need and about how much will that cost me? this is something I really want to but i need to price it out just to see... :) Thanks

ok well you well advanced adaptors will tell you how much for a adaptor to go from your engine to a 302. if they make one if not you could put a c6 auto (rough cost 400 at junk yard)behind it and cut the crossmember to make it fit also put in a tranny cooler. for a manual you could use a t5 out of a (rought cost same 400) mustang probably would have to cut and move crossmember cut and shorten driveshaft for both applications. would have to beef up rear axel not strong enoughreally to have all power sent to it.then you would have to wire it to make it run if it is fuel injected real pain in the arse. umma just a few thoughts all the major stuff

im a dumbass but i got somethin else you might wanna think about.

i think you have a 4 cyl. engine if i remember right. i would be worried about the 4x2 ranger suspension being able to hold up an engine like that.

and once again im no expert but i think you would need a 9.75 differential with decent gears. and like they said above, your tanny will go off like a nuke with that much more HP on it.

look on the bright side, you could let the intake stick out of the hood, so when you hit the gas the little flaps open. thats cool.

302 vs turbo

i have been considering this mod for quite a while, just dont have the $$$....

my best advice is to do the 302.... there is a company that makes a kit, ($600-700) which comes w/ everything you need to do the replacement for a ranger. swapping a 302 for the 4.0L v6 is easier, but you can do it for the 4bangers too. still, i would buy the engine and the kit, take it to your local auto shop, and ask them to do it for you (with the exception that you're extremely comfortable w ripping out engines...) as your engine is the heart and soul of your truck; ruining something like that would be unpardonable.

power wise, the 302 is going to give you close to 230 horses, where as turboing your 4cyl will bring you maybe 180 if you're lucky. not to mention an overstressed engine... w the v6, you might be able to pull off 200 (optimistically) but once again, the stock engines aren't built to handle that kind of strain.

must we go into sound? i guarantee you that you'll be much happier w your 302 rumbling under your hood than a turbo clicking away....

hope you make the right choice.... :fordrules:

will the 3.0 L hold up the Turbo, every one i've talked to says it's strong enough as long as it's 6-7 PSI and no more...
i want the turbo instead

Josh the 3.0 with low boost should hold up to a turbo but is not worth the money since there isn't a kit available. You have to custom make all the tubing and exhaust to run the turbo. The 5.0 swap is the best bet plus with a used 5.0,a Advace Adapter or Kauffman Prducts swap kit and 8.8 rear swap from a 6cyl. Ranger or Explorer would make a nice street truck. Just make sure the brakes are up to the task and I would recommend 4.0 front springs to handle the weight. Remember that the initial price of the swap is not what makes the swap somewhat costly its all the little stuff that pops up to do the swap right and not just another hack job.

Re: 302 in a ranger

If you do an engine swap to a V8, you know you are going to have to swap out that rear end cluster for something bigger.

The 4.0 packages are the only ones that come with the 8.8 ring gear if I recall.

Anything smaller may not hold up.

See if you can find a 8.8 at the boneyard.

And I would want to swap for a V8 onto a 4.o platform only anyways, cause it makes it so much easier imo.
