engine trouble

Ok....this is kinda hard to explain(without you being in the truck when it happens)but I'll try as best I can.

Some times when my truck is under heavy acceleration, like pulling onto the interstate,or going up long steep hills it will start to act up.
It doesn't do this all the time but it's becoming more frequent. It loses power bad and starts to act like its missing real bad. It won't come out of it untill I stop and rev it up several times, and even then sometimes it takes a while to get back to normal. It doesn't smoke or anything like that, but it sounds like it's loaded up real bad. It's getting to the point that I don't really trust it to go on the highway any more. It really gets your attention when you're pullin out on the interstate and you don't have enough power to get out of the way of that big truck coming up on you yet you can't really pull off either. One time of that was enough..........

One guy I know told me my cam is going, but I don't know if I should take his word or not. He has been around cars alot but he doesn't have the best reputation when it comes to fixing them..hehe...

Any help you guys can give me would be greatly appreciated.

start with simple stuff first
1 plugs

3 cap and rotor
4 filters and pcv valve
5 chech the timing belt to make sure it has not jumped a tooth
6 dose it still have the stock cat could be plugged
7 " " muffler " "

I'll tell ya right now, the old guy has been sippin too much of his cough medicine. Your cam will likely outlive your piston rings, and if it isnt smoking......well....you get the idea.

Beradtke has the best advice at this point. If all of the simple stuff checks out, let us know and we can go from there. I do have a couple of ideas of what it may be, but lets start simple.

ok well heres my take check your tranny, i had this old maxima a long time ago and well lets just say i banged the hell out of her, but i noticed after a while that i couldnt get up and go it would just rev go a little then catch a little later so i took it in and it was my tran. i had clipped off all the teeeth in first and second just about, and was starting to kill third, got it fixed for a mere 800 later, if i knew then what i know now, but that is one of my few ideas the MAF idea is a good one too check and clean that, also did you check your intake hoses to see if you have aclog in em or if one may be loose or anything

no first gen rangers didnt have mass air. if they were EFI motors it had speed density. but still clean out the housing. change your O2 sensors, have your ignition control modual checked or replaced. have you tried changing your IAC valve (if you have fuel injection)? try those all them would cause those problems. best way to find out the problem is to put a computer scanner on your truck and run codes!

i once had a chevy that slipped into a pond and got a little bit of the wrong fluid in the fuel line.

what would happen is the fuel filter would get full and the fuel wouldnt flow quite as fast so the engine would get bogged down. without the right mixture of fuel and air you loose power. after reving it up a couple of times the fuel pushes through and it runs alright.

maybe you need a fuel filter?

Thats what i was gunna say...is change out the fuel filter, after so many years it can become clogged.....just ask berad. He helped me fix mine and that was the problem. I was losing power in allof my gears even when i'd downshift and punch the throttle. That would be my guess.

checked plugs, cleaned them, checked all vacume lines, replaced 2 that looked pretty sad,did the manual blow through the fuel filter, seemed to be ok, pretty much all checked out......

took her down the interstate and the same thing happened but this time it died.....took a bit to get her started back up but after that it made it to the next exit without any trouble.

it was only a 3 mile stretch of highway....since i didnt want to be stranded out there.

it died about half way through...............

Is it possible that my cat or muffler is plugged,or partially plugged?

Yesterday my truck blew the gasket right after the cat. It sounded awfull. Sounded like rice....lol! It did seam to run better though.

I replaced the gasket and now it seams like its restricted....

If it wasnt so loud id leave it open. But it wasnt even a cool sounding loud..like I said before....sounded like rice....bout drove me nuts.

Still having the same trouble.....I didnt knock the guts outa the convertyer yet....

Had a friend check it out this weekend. I didnt see much of what he was doing since I was in the garage tryin to finish up his truck...(damn chevy..hehe). I do know that he checked my timing and it was so far off that he had to have me come look at the reading. We set it back to stock...took it for a drive and decided that 6degrees wasnt gonna cut it. We bumped her up to about 8.

Seems to be runnin fine in town but still does the same sh!t on the highway.Boggs down real bad then acts like its missin really bad then dies......its a bitch to get started again, turns over funny...slow then real fast...then slow....then real fast....

Im about to give up. Dont really have the money to put it in the shop.

Guess who went down the highway tonight...."trouble free!"

Doctor Beradtke83 was right! He cured my truck!

I rammed a bar into the cat n knocked all its guts out, blew it out good ,then ran her down the highway.
Made it without a prob.

Thinkin about replacin the cat tomorrow with a piece of pipe.

Kinda sounds funky....kinda has this tinny resinating sound....

The only down side is now I can really hear how bad it was missing....not that thats really a bad thing....gonna replace all the plugs wires cap rotor n all tomorrow also.

I'll keep ya updated......Thanks Beradtke83!
