Octane Control Thing

I read somewhere that there is an octane control job on the right side fender in all the wiring mess, i think i found it and pulled it out, nothing blew up and i think i get better power (it may be psychological) anyone know of this or what it may do?

sounds like hot air to me, octane is effected by refining process wile making gasoline, the only way you can boost the octane level in gasoline is to put in some additives while filling up.

its not an octane booster, but something about retarding the timing 3 or 4 degrees to allow better performance with high octane gas. im just getting into my ranger well enough to make adjustments like such and not real clear on the whole timing thing

Dangerranger: If what you pulled out is square with several flat prongs sticking out of the bottom, you just pulled a relay switch (glorified fuse). I have never heard of what you are talking about. Most emissions controls are done by a simple sensor and computer...not an oddly located peripheral box on your fender. BUT.... stranger things have happened! :-) Can you snap and post a photo of what you pulled so we can see? That would be a great help. Also, what year/engine is your ranger?
