Mass Air Flow sensor cleaning

Well guys, I have been having this problem with my engine for the longest time that when I accelerate their is a nasty pinging coming form the engine. It turns out that this wasnt much of a problem at all infact all I needed to do was clean my mass air flow sensor. I have found a picture of where it is located and circled it so I dont have to describe it. On my 94 explorer all I needed was a t20 security star screwdriver and a wet paper towel. By simply unscrewing the sensor and cleaning the two filaments at the bottom I have solved my engine problems completely. This was suggested by a guy at another forum I was looking at and he suggested cleaning about every 25k miles. He also said it solves engine idling problems since the mass air flow sensor determines the mixture of gas and air to send to the engine. Hope this helps you guys as much as it did me! Im a shit load happier now that my engine sounds normal.

yea mine is an AirRaid brand setup with a K&N filter on a 4.2 F150

i started with air raid so that i could get better gas mileage and i do. it also gives better throttle response.

i sleep great knowing i drive a full size extended cab truck and i get a little over 20 mpg with intake and bed cover. imagine what you could do

Also, anyone using open filter need to be careful not to over-oil them when cleaning
them. Too much oil will wig out the maf.

its a switch that you put in your truck that you hook up to the fuel shut-off switch (feature on late model f150s) so that when you park you flip the switch and your truck dies so when the theif gets in he can cut all the wires he wants, but no start up.

Hey guys just a little personal experience on this. I started cleaning mine about 6 months ago and it worked for a while. But I don't know if I cleaned it too much or if I damaged it or what but mine went bad so I had to buy a new one. So, just a warning, be VERY VERY VERY careful when cleaning these. Most of the time I cleaned mine with carb cleaner and then air dry. One time I cleaned it with alcohol and cotton ball. Good luck!

locate your airbox and it will be attached to it. You can also look in your owners manual.
