Building Custom Box

Well Ive come to the unseen reality that my truck is not going to sell so Im going to stick with what i got and improve a few things...

So I going to build a custom sub box to house 2 10s . I already have the 2 10s, amp, new power cable and fuse... and everything basically... now i just need a new box.

So i have a few questions as i will be starting this asap!!! YOSHTIN!!!! Im gonna need your help on this.

Ok here goes? What kind of wood do you use to make it the best quality? I will need to use wood glue and nails to completely seal the box correct? Any other ideas to make sure its tight? Where can i get a power output hookup for the box that i make or should i just take it off the box i had for my 8"? I also need dimensions?

MTX audio had these dimensions for their thunderform for the 98-00 ranger... 28.5" x 12.5" x 9", but thats for 1 10. I do NOT want to adjust the seats forward at all... because im tall... and cant afford to lose the space. Also... I would like to have the 2 10s behind each of the seats... and in the middle a flat section that i will mount the amp too... Anyones help would be greatly appreciated to make this as easy as possible!

Also would the subs need to be sealed seperately from each other?

If you build your own you need to use MDF....I have the thunderform and I like it alot....no leg room loss...check the mounting depth of your subs to find out how much room they need it the box. Also check out www.subbox.net as they have a custom made box for our trucks for 2 10's (dimensions are 36x12x8)

I think that you are going to have to get rid of the speakers in the back if you want to fit the 2 10s and your amp. I know that there isn't that much room under my seats for an amp. I would use 3/4 MDF, and seal off each sub, incase one diessome day down the road.

I recently built a custom box for a single 10". I used 3/4" MDF from home depot, and it worked out really well. I used polyurethane glue which expands as it dries so there are absolutely no cracks. For the hookup block, I followed car toy's suggestion to just pass the wiring through the side of the wall of the box, and use a little silicone to seal it up. I bought some 2x6 foot carpet and used glue and staple gun. It turned out great. My only complaint was the stiff wire I used is somewhat of a paint to route.

I even have a spare 2x4 foot sheet of MDF you can have. I bought two, but only used one to create a box for a single 10". I believe for the best sound, you will want each subwoofer sectioned off. So you can build in a divider into a giant box. The hardest part is the flat area for the amplifier. It should fit just fine, but just depends on how visible you want it to be, and how much room you need.

ok im back heres what you do go and buy some 3/4 mdf from home depot or some where about 15-20 bucks for a sheet. then find that top mounting depth of your subs b/c in mine they had to cut the back of the box and and nail some thinner material on the back. if your subs are bigger than 51/4 think of gettin new subs. you are gonna need nail gun, wood glue and some silicone for inside the box. your best bet is to go to car toys and have them make it. it will sound alot better if they do it trust me b/c they will seal it better. but if you insist on makin it your self then go to ebay and look up "ford ranger" and the box idea that i got was from the dual 10 box that they have in there.

if you want me to i can graph out the dimensions of the box and everything. i think that the total volume in the box is 1.1 cuft of air space

This is the box I built. If you use polyurethane glue, it will expand and create a nice bead inside to seal the box. I used a jigsaw to cut everything, a drill and some sheet metal screws (better for MDF) and the glue. The whole process took me about 2 hours of work and about 4 days because I let each section dry while being clamped. My total cost about 12 bucks in wood (only used half), 8 bucks for the bottle of glue (only used about 1/4), and about 5 bucks in carpet, and 3 bucks in screws. You should be able to build your box for under 40 bucks. Let me know if you need any help...

Well you ARE going to lose some room somewhere, but I am 6'1" tall, and 200 pounds, so if I am comfortable, it shouldn't be that much of a reduction. It is a noticable difference vs. no box at all, but I can't notice a difference between my previous box which was 2 inches too shallow for my new sub...

The outside dimesions are 12 inches tall, 18 inches wide, 6 inches deep at the top and 9 inches deep at the bottom. (Inside 10.5 x 16.5 x 6 or .601 cubic feet) These dimensions make it fit snug right underneath the notch in my back panel of my regular cab. It's a little small interior space for my sub, but for what I lose in volume I gain in tightness. I could have made the box wider by two inches and could have filled up the space underneath the right rear speaker. I just wanted plenty of room for my amplifier mounted behind the passenger seat and wanted the box to be as square as possible.

Center console is entact and unaffected in everyway. Which is good because I use it as an arm rest for my manual transmission, and can pull up the armrest so you cannot even see my box from the outside.

Don't check my cardomain pics yet, as I need to update them with pics of the new box and completed wiring...

Well I have most of the box drawn out. Its really worrying me as it will be close to fit 2 10s... but i guess at worst i can fit 2 8s easily...

Also im not removing the rear speakers but rather building the box around them. Havent calculated the air space either but building the box to the max dimensions (so that i dont have to move the seats forward and the amp is mounted on the box). Im sure it will look nice... i guess we'll see how it sounds.

I will also post dimensions and pictures when done for anyone that is inspired to do the same thing lol.

Don't forget to give your subs room to move. I had to move my seat up a notch so it gave my subwoofer enough room to move outwards. I really need a grill for it!

Are you going to use the room underneath the rear speakers? It's not optimal airspace, but if you are cutting it close to meeting your minimum goal I would go for it! Where are you going to move your tire jack and tools?

lol tire jack and tools. I can fully extend the tire jack and its still not close to touching the bottom . They are already out. Yes im using the airspace under my speakers to grab as much as possible. And i will be using the speaker grills to protect the subs so i can have my seat all the way back.

Oops, forgot about your lift. I guess that's because I've never seen your truck live, except driving by at Chucks a while back. Funny thing is, my girlfriend saw it later that night...

Well good luck on the box building!

Well the wrong grills can turn your sound into crap, but if you use the right ones, the grills will have nothing to do with the sound. The purpose of the grill is to allow your sub to move wherever it wants to without hitting anything. A grill also keeps curious fingers and other stuff from damaging the subwoofer.

Idealy, the grill is only there to keep the back of your seat from impeding the speaker's travel. Neon may do the same, except for anything hitting the center of the woofer, but who will see neon that is behind the seat in a regular cab?

blckmustnggt, I talked to a sound guy the other day for a while and (these are just opinions ) I think I've come to agree with him that one good 8 or ten ported is just as loud or louder than 2 sealed and it saves you some big bucks because you're buying half the rig. There ARE boxes pre-made for decent prices that will fit two tens exactly as you mentioned, but once again i would advise trying to port a single sub and then pushing it respectably. Anyways, good luck w/ your system and i hope it works out great man!
