Just wondering which muffler everyone is running and why they chose it. I left the stock muffler on my Ranger for the first 2 years. I switched to a Flowmaster
because I wanted something that sounded a little better. My mistake was I went to the local muffler shop and just told them "I want a Flowmaster muffler."
They installed a "super 40" series because that's what all the kids were buying and that's what they stocked. They gave me a single 3" in duel 2.5" out into 4 Gibson tips.
While many people told me it looked and sounded GREAT, I couldn't take the noise. It was
LOUD. The interior resonance drove me crazy. I also lost ALL my low end.
My 0-60 times dropped. This on a engine that was already weak from 0-60. My MPG went down a bit also. I'd say about .25 to .50 MPG. Must admit my 50-85 mph times improved.
Passing 18 wheelers and motor-homes on a 2 lane became much less "
dramatic." After about 1 year I couldn't stand it anymore and I took the Flowmaster off and replaced it.
I got a MagnaFlow. Single 2.25" in and duel 2" out into the same 4 gibson tips. Although it's still a bit louder than I'd like, (guess I'm getting old.) it's a sound I can live with.
Hopefully this small annoyance will disappear after I finish sound deadening the floor. Now that I have the correct pipe size again, the low end performance (such as it is) has returned.
The duel exhaust is probably hurting me a bit, but it's the look and sound I was after. I can live with the small loss in performance, some of which I regained when I got the programmer.
My seat of the pants gauge tell me I've gained very little if anything in the way of performance. Maybe 2-3 HP. I'm sure the improvement would be greater if I had moded the engine more.
With a basically stock engine, I feel all I gained was the sound I wanted. That's OK with me.
