Sorry. Using ARCO was a bad example. It all has to do with the octane number. I'd guess the 86 has a little less knock inhibitors.
Which in turn allows the oil companies to produce and sell it for a few pennys less. I don't know why they would want to do that in some areas and not others.
My Ranger Owner's manual states. "Your vehicle is designed to use "Regular" unleaded gasoline with a pump (R+M)/2 octane rating of 87.
We DO NOT recommend the use of gasolines labeled as "Rergular" that are sold with octane ratings of 86 or lower in high altitude areas.
To me that implies that if you use 86 octane in high altitude areas and damage your enging, your warranty might be void.
